Invisalign Attachments: What Are They? Do They Hurt?

Invisalign uses a series of custom aligners to gently and gradually shift the teeth into their proper positions. However, those aligners do not always work alone! In some cases, attachments are necessary to facilitate successful treatment. What exactly are Invisalign attachments, and do they hurt? This blog post provides some helpful information.

An Introduction to Invisalign Attachments

When you hear the term “Invisalign attachment,” you might automatically think of something that gets attached to your aligners. The truth is, though, that these attachments actually get placed on specific teeth! These small, tooth-colored bumps have the goal of guiding the force of your aligners and providing valuable anchorage that allows Invisalign to move your teeth more efficiently. Attachments are different from bite ramps and bumps, which are attached to the aligners themselves.

If your case requires attachments, your orthodontist will likely discuss that with you during your initial consultation. Once they are in place, they will probably need to stay throughout the duration of your treatment, though some patients can get them removed sooner.

What Do Invisalign Attachments Feel Like?

The process of placing Invisalign attachments is easy and comfortable. After your appointment, though, you might experience mild discomfort because of the increased pressure that is being placed on your teeth. This sensation should wear off within a few days.

Removing Invisalign attachments is also nothing to worry about. Your orthodontist will use specialized tools to get them off your teeth, then polish away any residue. You should not experience any pain during this process.

What Else Should You Know About Invisalign Attachments?

Here are a few more important notes about Invisalign attachments:

  • They are small and discreet, so they should not have a big impact on the way your smile looks.
  • You can continue to eat what you want, though you might need to be extra-cautious with hard and sticky foods. (These items might dislodge your attachments if you overindulge.)
  • Invisalign attachments might become discolored if you overindulge in highly pigmented foods and beverages. A good oral hygiene routine can minimize stains.
  • There might also be minor discoloration on your teeth around your attachments. Your hygienist may be able to polish this away during a routine cleaning.

Invisalign attachments can play an important role in your orthodontic treatment. Talk to your provider to learn more about them and how they work.
