Brace Yourself: Here’s What It Feels Like to Get Braces

Traditional metal braces are a tried-and-true way to straighten out misaligned teeth even in severe cases. While this orthodontic treatment can deliver remarkable results that last for a lifetime with proper care, many prospective patients may be nervous about what kind of discomfort they may experience during the placement and process and the adjustment period afterward. Here’s a brief guide to what getting braces feels like so you can know what to expect.

Day One with Braces

You will probably not feel any pain when you receive your braces. However, since you will have to keep your mouth open for an extended period, you may feel some discomfort. During the procedure, your orthodontist will dry your teeth, apply cement to each one, attach metal brackets, and then connect each of these pieces with arch wires. Once this is complete, you can expect a feeling of tightness around your teeth.

Week One with Braces

You can expect to feel some discomfort when you wake up the day after receiving braces. As your teeth begin to shift toward their new positions, you will probably experience an aching feeling and a steady sense of pressure. While this pain will not be debilitating, it can be quite bothersome. However, it’s important to remember that this is an essential part of the process of realignment.

If you develop any sores at any of the points of contact between your braces and soft tissues, you can address them with measures such as:

  • Using orthodontic wax to cover the troublesome metal parts. This will smooth over rough edges to prevent poking or irritation.
  • Using an over-the-counter pain reliever or oral anesthetic to reduce pain and discomfort. This can make it much easier to sleep at night.

After Having Your Braces Adjusted

While wearing braces, you’ll have to see your orthodontist regularly so your appliance can be adjusted. This may include bending your arch wires to change the way they pull on your teeth or changing them out for heavier or lighter ones. Your orthodontist may also attach special rubber bands to address issues like crossbites. After these adjustments, you may experience a period of tightness or discomfort, but this will diminish over time.

Traditional braces have allowed millions of people to enjoy beautifully straight smiles. Once your treatment is over, you can enjoy all the benefits that come with well-aligned teeth for years to come.
